Need to eat 4 less?


Cooking is not necessarily a top skill for the average student. Put off by expense or ability it's easier to get a take out or ready meal.

Relax, we'll make it easy for you. We've gone round the studentswapshop office and picked our favouite recipies that should cost you less than a couple if quid to make.
 
Here's what we've got for this month:

 

 

Curried Chicken

 

with Cashew Rice

(serves 2)

 

Ingredients:

1 tablespoon curry paste
1 fresh grren or red chilli (optional)
basmati rice - cooked (enough for 2 people)
100g cooked chicken (shredded)
handful of frozen peas
50g cashew nuts
squeeze of fresh lemon juice

What to do.

  1. Spoon the curry paste into a frying pan and heat it up. If you want it to be hot add the chilli
  2. Stur in the rice, chicken, peas and cashews.
  3. Stir fry until really hot and then add salt and pepper to season and teh lemon juice.
  4. Serve and eat!

 

 

Roast Squash Pasta

 

 

 

Ingredients:

1 small butternut squash
1 small onion
1 clove garlic
3oz penne pasta
1.5 tablespoons creme fraiche

What to do.

  1. Heat the oven to 200C
  2. Peel and cut into chunks the butternut squash and put into a baking tray with a little oil
  3. Peel the onion and cut into 8 wedges
  4. Add the onion and garlic to the tin and put in the opven for 30 minutes.
  5. Meanwhile cook the pasta follwoingteh instuctions on the packet.
  6. Once the pasta is cooked, drain and save 4 tablespoons of the water
  7. Take the veg out of the oven and add the creme fraiche and the water you saved to the roasting tin.
  8. Add the pasta to the tin, mix and serve in a bowl.

Supermarket own brands are up to 25% cheaper. Own brand items are often much cheaper and their quality can sometimes be just as good as items with well-known names. With a bit of trial and error you could find a range of own label items that you’re happy with, saving you loads in the long run.
